Tatlarin Underground City

One of the destinations that stands out with its enchanting atmosphere is Cappadocia, which is breathtaking not only with its fairy chimneys but also with the ancient artifacts that have been preserved for thousands of years. In this region where major wars took place, it is known that people sought refuge in underground cities to protect themselves from raids. These underground cities were constructed to meet all the essential needs of the inhabitants. The church of Tastes is also a church located in the underground city of Tatlarin.

Tatlarin Underground City

Tatlarin underground city holds the characteristic of being a refuge and living space used by different civilizations. It takes its name from the town it is located in. Discovered and opened to visitors after many years, this structure underwent approximately 16 years of work to be developed for tourism after its first encounter in 1975. It was partially opened to the public in 1991.

At the entrance of the underground city, there is a tunnel of about 15 meters. This tunnel was constructed to enhance security during raids. Since the main entrance to the city became unusable and collapsed, visits are now conducted through this tunnel. The key stone at the end of the tunnel is closed during attacks, ensuring the safety of the people living in the underground city.

Inside the underground city’s hall, skeletons from many years ago have been discovered. These skeletons suggest that this section might have been used as a tomb or prison.

In the further sections of the underground city, stables and granaries are found. The granaries were used to meet the grain needs of the people during periods when it was necessary to stay underground for a long time. The reason for keeping animals in the lower level is to facilitate the easy exit of animals such as horses and camels in case of any danger.

Tatlarin Church

Tatlarin underground city contains two churches. Based on dating studies, it is understood that these churches date back to the 13th century. However, these churches are located in the first two levels of the underground city. It is believed that there might be more churches in the levels that have not been opened due to potential dangers.

The existing churches are constructed with two arches. The motifs found in the churches predominantly depict scenes described in the Bible. Additionally, when you examine the architecture and motifs of the churches, you can see significant similarities with the Church of St. John.
